About Steve Martland
Steve Martland studied composition in Holland with Louis Andriessen. Preoccupied with the function of the composer in society, he directed many composition projects in schools in both his home country England and abroad and ran Strike Out, his own annual composition course for school children. His music has been adapted frequently for film and TV use, commissioned by BBC and Granada TV. Martland’s music has been performed by many performers and ensembles such as the St. Louis Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Colin Currie. He has been awarded the SACD Prize for Video Dance Choreography Music. Other commissions of his include Henri Oguike Dance Company, King’s Singers and Evelyn Glennie, TROMP International Music Festival and Competition, Ars Nova Copenhagen, and Youth Music. Martland was composer in residence at the ETNA Music Festival in Sicily. Martland passed away unexpectedly on 7 May, 2013.
